McKINNEY — It was not the Thursday night in the Metroplex the Lions were hoping for.
Jayden Walker rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns to power the McKinney North Bulldogs to a 34-13 win over the Tyler Lions in a District 7-5A Division I football game at McKinney ISD Stadium.
The Lions fall to 1-4 on the season and 1-1 in district, while the Bulldogs improve to 4-1 and 1-1.
Walker helped the the Bulldogs celebrate homecoming as he carried the ball 30 times and scored on TD runs of 4, 83 and 17 yards.
The Lions put up some offensive numbers, but could convert only two touchdowns after multiple ventures into Bulldog territory.
Tyler quarterback Derrick McFall led the Lions with 98 yards on 13 carries, while hitting on 13 of 27 passing attempts for 221 yards. He tossed TD passes of 24 to Montrell Wade and 68 to Ja'Davion Lacy.
JaMichael Cooper added 54 yards on 10 carries on the ground. Ashad Walker had five catches for 54 yards, while Lacy had four receptions for 108 yards. Marquette Marquette Martin had two catches for 31 yards with Wade adding two for 28.
The Lions totaled 389 yards of offense (168 rushing, 221 passing), but the Bulldogs had 469 (354 rushing, 115 passing). McKinney North, using an up-tempo offense bounced back from its six-turnover game in last week's 74-7 loss to Lancaster. The Bulldogs ran the ball 62 times while throwing 15 times.
Tyler ran the ball 28 times as well as passing 28 times.
The Lions trailed 13-6 at halftime.
After Tyler forced a punt on the Bulldogs' first possession, the Lions moved to midfield where they went for it on fourth-and-2. A long pass almost connected, but fell incomplete.
McKinney North then traveled 50 yards in seven plays. Jayden Walker topped off the march with a 4-yard burst up the middle for the TD. Trevor Dutton booted the PAT and the Bulldogs led 7-0 with 5:48 in the first quarter.
The Lions gained great field position when Marquette Martin returned the kickoff 26 yards to their own 49. After an illegal block negated a long pass to Wade, the Lions overcame the setback. Tyler converted a fourth-and-1 at the 32 on a hard run by De'Marion Dewberry to the 28. Two players later, McFall pitched the ball forward to Wade, who made a nice run around left end, outracing the Bulldogs for a 24-yard TD with 31 seconds left in the first quarter.
A bad snap resulted in holder Zachuan Williams trying to run in for two points, but he was stopped short. Thus, Tyler trailed 7-6.
On the first play of the second quarter, Jayden Walker burst over the right side and dashed 83 yards for the TD. The try for two failed and the Bulldogs led 13-6 with 11:46 on the clock.
After the Lions failed on a fourth-and-8 at the McKinney North 35, the Bulldogs kept the ball for 11 plays, reaching the Tyler 4. From the Wildcat formation on third down, the Bulldogs' Jayden Walker tried a jump pass, ala Tim Tebow, but the Lions' Vakerious Smith grabbed the interception and ran it out to the 17, halting a potential score.
Next week both teams have an open date.
The Lions are scheduled to host Lancaster on Oct. 7 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
The Bulldogs are slated to visit West Mesquite on Thursday, Oct. 6.
