ET Volleyball: Pine Tree rolls over Greenville

It was Teacher Appreciation Night on Tuesday at the Pirate Center prior to the Lady Pirates' District 16-5A home opener with the Greenville Lady Lions.
After recognizing those instructors who have made an impact, the Lady Pirates schooled Greenville in a straight set sweep 25-21, 25-23, 25-18.
All three sets were hotly contested and hard-fought. The Lady Lions leaned heavily on their big hitter Jade Jacobs, while the Lady Pirates spread the wealth among a number of power hitters.
Emily Jones came through with three kills in the opening set, while Natalie Collins warmed up from the service line.
Sarah Moore showed up big in a thrilling second set with timely kills and Collins was once again money at the stripe.
Moore and Sam Sommerfeld were tough customers serving in the third. Jones along with Harper Finley, Maizie Hart and Sommerfeld provided the muscle.
"I was proud of our composure and the way we executed when we really needed to," said Lady Pirate coach Carolee Musick. "I'm hoping as we're building forward we'll continue to have more aggressive play and confident play as well as composed play."
Sommerfeld served Pine Tree to an early 3-0 lead in set one as Finley dropped in a shot and the sophomore outside hitter rang up an ace.
A kill from Jones and a timely block from senior Jordan Fuller pushed the lead to 6-1.
Greenville fought its way back to tie and even take the lead momentarily on a block from Emily Saenz.
An ace from Hale Morgan allowed Pine Tree to retake the lead and Sommerfeld drove down a kill to make it 12-10.
Jones got a dink from Collins and reeled off three unanswered as the lead grew to 22-17.
Holding to a 23-21 opening set advantage, Finley and Hart teamed for a block. Morgan served out for a 1-0 lead.
Collins took serve after Finley broke Greenville's initial shot. The senior setter recorded a pair of aces as the margin moved to 6-0.
The Lady Pirates controlled set two up until a surge by the Lady Lions made it 17-18. Sommerfeld managed a break and followed with a kill off Morgan's serve.
Greenville tied it up 22-22 when Jones answered with a kill. Collins took it to game point before the Lady Lions returned long.
Pine Tree had to work even harder to close out the third set after falling behind early.
Moore took command with ball in hand and served four unanswered. She was helped out nicely with Jones and Finley kill shots for a 10-8 lead.
Sommerfeld moved Pine Tree's lead to 16-11 before an unforced error broke serve.
A Moore ace inched the Lady Pirates closer to a sweep and Finley put the exclamation with a game-ending kill shot.
Jones led the way for Pine Tree with seven kills. Moore added six, while Sommerfeld and Finley each had five.
Morgan finished the night with 20 digs. Blair Shelton had 11 and Sommerfeld 10.
Collins led with a dozen service points and Sommerfeld made it a triple double with 10 winners.
Pine Tree, which improves to 2-0 in league play and 16-9 overall, is on the road Friday at Texas High.
