ET Football: L-K's Johnson, Big Sandy's Minter named Players of the Week
A couple of sophomores turned in standout performances to help their teams head into the playoffs on a winning note this week.
For their efforts, Linden-Kildare's Ladavian Johnson and Big Sandy's Caden Minter took top honors for the final week of the regular season — Johnson earning Texas Bank and Trust Offensive Player of the Week honors and Minter picking up Rockers, Riders & Ribs Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Johnson had a short but productive night in a 49-6 win over Quinlan Boles, carrying 13 times for 295 yards and scoring five touchdowns. He played just one series in the second half of the blowout win.
For the season, the sophomore standout has 176 carries for 1,902 yards (10.8 per carry) and 28 touchdowns. He's also been solid on defense for the Tigers with 26 tackles, six tackles for loss, a forced fumble, four fumble recoveries, four passes defended and an interception.
The Tigers (8-2) will open the playoffs on Thursday against Kerens (6-4) with a 7 p.m. contest at Big Sandy's Wildcat Stadium.
Minter, meanwhile, has stepped up his game during district play to the tune of double-digit tackles in all five Wildcat league contests.
He had 13 tackles and a forced fumble on Friday in a 69-19 win over Cayuga. In district play, he recorded 63 tackles, a sack, three passes defended, seven tackles for loss and two forced fumbles — racking up 11 tackles against Cross Roads, 15 against Kerens, 13 against Union Grove and 11 against Hawkins before his baker's dozen against Cayuga.
Big Sandy (9-1) will face Honey Grove (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Greenville to open the playoffs.
