ET Basketball Notebook: TST's Liebengood, Pewitt's Cobbins earn honors, more
Trinity School of Texas junior Caleb Liebengood and Paul Pewitt senior Ebony Cobbins both averaged a double-double for their respective teams last week, and for their efforts they have been named ETvarsity.com Basketball Players of the Week.
Liebengood averaged 27 points and 16 rebounds for Trinity School as the Titans won the championship at the Christian Heritage School Winter Invitational.
After scoring 23 points and pulling down 19 rebounds in a 65-57 win over Longview Christian School, Liebengood added 31 points and 19 boards in a 68-51 win over East Texas Christian School before closing out the weekend with 29 points and 10 rebounds in a 69-60 championship win over Christian Heritage School.
Cobbins, meanwhile, averaged 26.3 points, 14 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 4.0 assists in six games for Paul Pewitt, which went 4-2 for the week — including a 4-1 roll in the Big Sandy Tournament.
At the Big Sandy Tournament, Cobbins averaged 27.8 points, 14.8 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 4.6 assists. She lit up Waskom for 46 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and five assists, and had 30 points, 16 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals against Cumberland Academy.
In other outstanding performances from around East Texas in games played Nov. 27-Dec. 2 (nominated by coaches):
Pine Tree's J.J. Sparkman scored 34 points to go along with 15 rebounds and seven assists in a win over Chapel Hill.
Big Sandy's Josiah Johnson and Joshua Shipman combined to average nearly 50 points and 17 rebounds in leading the Wildcats to a 6-0 record for the week and a championship in the Grand Saline Tournament.
Johnson averaged 28.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists in five games (he missed one game for SAT testing), and scored 28 points to go along with four rebounds and seven assists in a 71-64 overtime victory against Palestine Westwood in the tournament championship game.
Shipman averaged 20 points and 7.3 rebounds in six games, scoring 22 points and collecting seven boards in the championship tilt against Westwood.
Beckville's Stephen Darden earned all-tournament honors at the Union Grove Tournament. He had 20 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals against Hamshire Fannett and 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals against McLeod. Teammate Taylor Hightower scored 15 points and added five steals against McLeod and 13 points, three steals and four rebounds against Cushing.
Longview's Destiny McAfee averaged 17.5 points, 5.8 steals, 5.1 assists and 11.1 rebounds as the Lady Lobos went 5-1 for the week. She was 16-for-19 from the free throw line.
Harmony's Macey Russell, Katelyn Seahorn and Hope Howard were all solid for the Lady Eagles in five games last week. Russell averaged 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.2 steals, Seahorn 8.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals and Howard 7.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals.
Union Grove's Summer Grubbs averaged 17 points, six rebounds, fur steals and four assists for the week, including a triple-double (30 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals, 6 assists) in a 62-36 win over West Rusk. Teammate Haley Breazeale averaged 11 points, two steals and three rebounds at the Union Grove Tournament to earn all-tournament honors.
Sulphur Springs (13 in 5A), Mount Vernon (14 in 3A), Central (16 in 3A), Edgewood (22 in 3A), Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill (23 in 3A), Tenaha (1 in 2A), Martin's Mill (3 in 2A), Big Sandy (4 in 2A), San Augustine (5 in 2A), Cushing (9 in 2A), Lufkin Pineywoods (10 in 2A), Clarksville (15 in 2A), Broaddus (21 in 2A), Evadale (22 in 2A), Laneville (3 in 1A), Slocum (21 in 1A), Martinsville (24 in 1A), Avinger (25 in 1A), Longview Christian School (5 in TAPPS 2A) and Trinity School of Texas (9 in TAPPS 1A) are this week's ranked East Texas teams in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
Top-ranked teams for the week are Cy Falls in 6A, Waxahachie in 5A, Silsbee in 4A, Jarrell in 3A, and Lipan in 1A.
