JEFFERSON — A full week of football practice is in the books for Jefferson and coaches say the Bulldogs are a lot further along than they were last year at this time.

"As coaches, we're just trying to refine the small details," head coach Antwain Jimmerson said. "We've been blessed with the weather. It's nice and cool and the weather's really not a factor. So that's been great. I'm proud of our guys. We had a really good offseason. We had a good summer. So now we can get to the point where we're just working on football stuff. We're returning a lot of experience where we can throw a lot at them early to see what sticks. It's been good so far."

"The benefit for us is we have plenty of returning starters," offensive coordinator Josh Keith said. "This is their third year in the offense and we're light years ahead. It's not as much teaching. It's more refining. We have a lot more energy than we've had in the last three years. That's the big plus for us."

"My only surprise is how far ahead we are as a defense," defensive coordinator Stephen Young said. "We've still got some work to do but for it being day five, we're doing pretty good. I think we're understanding the concept a little better. The main thing with us is we're continuing to get better."

The coaches say they have a lot of senior leadership on both sides of the ball.

"We've got two or three who have really stepped up," Keith said. "We didn't lost a lot of seniors last year but the ones we had were some of the best leaders I've been around. Filling those shoes and filling those roles will be harder on us than on the field production."

"I think we've got it," Young said of the defense. "We've got Brady Varnell, he's a good leader for us. He's a good vocal leader for us. Then we've got a lot of young guys stepping up in that role too, Jacari Mosely, guys like that who we're going to have to depend on later."
