NACOGDOCHES — Fans and supporters of the Stephen F. Austin football program will get their first chance to see the Lumberjacks in action today as they prepare for the rapidly approaching 2017 season with the first of three preseason scrimmages.
The scrimmage will take place at 4 p.m. inside Homer Bryce Stadium as SFA competes against one another in full pads.
The open field scrimmage will feature the 'Jacks participating in drives down the field and running plays in full contact. The red zone will also be an emphasis of the scrimmage.
After completing eight practices of fall camp, including a grueling session Thursday afternoon in the oppressive heat, SFA will put on full pads for just the second time of the preseason Saturday and display what they have been working on. Energy and enthusiasm has been high among players during camp and coaches have been pleased with what they've seen from their team.
The defense has shined at times during camp under the direction of first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Byrd, while the 'Jacks' offensive line is back to health and looks to be much improved.
Fans and supporters of SFA athletics will have a chance to meet the 'Jacks football team at the 37th annual Meet the 'Jacks hosted by the Fredonia Rotary Club at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24. The event will be held in the Grand Ballroom of SFA's Baker Pattillo Student Center. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door the night of the event.
Dallas is the site of SFA's 2017 season opener as the 'Jacks take on the Mustangs of SMU for their annual FBS game Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. from Gerald J. Ford Stadium. One week later, SFA makes its 2017 Homer Bryce Stadium debut with a 6 p.m. non-conference tilt against Southern Utah on Saturday, Sept. 9.
Season tickets for 2017 SFA Football are on sale through the SFA athletics ticket office. Available season ticket packages include reserved chair back and reserved bench seats.
SFA football season tickets start at only $63 for the general public and $38 for faculty and staff. For more information, call (936) 468-5225.
