WHITE OAK — Their journey started innocently enough in mid-June and has taken them all the way to the Dixie 14U World Series.
White Oak's 14-year-old all-star team has advanced to play in Bluffton, South Carolina and proudly represent the state of Texas.
First game for the local contingent will be Saturday against Arkansas with first pitch at 6 p.m. central.
White Oak's odyssey began when they took second in a Tier 2 State Tournament in Jefferson that was played June 17-22. Inclement weather forced the tourney to be shortened and the title game was canceled.
By rule, first and second place teams advance, making the championship unnecessary.
It was on to Center for the Tier 1 State Tournament that was held July 8-14.
White Oak's path started with wins over Livingston, Center and Huntington. This put them into the semifinals against Atlanta.
In a nail-biter, Atlanta handed White Oak its first loss of the tourney, forcing a coin toss to determine the championship. Atlanta, White Oak and Splendora all had one loss.
The coin toss went Atlanta's way and White Oak played Splendora in an elimination match.
It wasn't even close as White Oak rolled to a 17-0 shutout. The rally was complete as Atlanta was a 16-14 victim in the nightcap.
The White Oak 14s are comprised of Blake Barlow, Carson Bower, Colton Cobb, Michael Bort, Dylan Carrell, Graham Young, Bryson Hoagland, Elijah Wright, Stephen Thomas and Michael Stevens.
Gary Bort is team manager, while Joe Bower, Shawn Carrell, Chris Barlow and Caleb Hill are coaches.
