ET Tennis: Five bound for state tournament

The Spring Hill doubles team of Kavin Patel and Blake Zeilinger have qualified for the state tournament.

Longview freshman Simran Kortikere, along with doubles teams from Kilgore (Ian St. Clair and Tyrese Sheffield) and Spring Hill (Blake Zeilinger and Kavin Patel) punched their tickets to the upcoming University Interscholastic League State Tennis Tournament based on their performances at regional meets earlier this week.

The UIL State Tennis Tournament is set for May 18-19 at Texas A&M University.


Kortikere placed second at the Class 6A Region II meet held in Waco. She defeated Alyssa Davilla of Houston MacArthur (6-0, 6-0), Ashley Penshorn of Montgomery (6-1, 1-6, 6-1) and Lucia Garcia of Klein Forest (6-4, 6-3) before defeating Tyler Lee's Claire Fisher (6-2, injury default).

Also for the Lobos, the doubles teams of Neal Rangu and Dawson Penn and Nita Brimmer and Lexi Penn along with singles player Austin Greifenkamp all finished as regional quarterfinalists.


The Hallsville team of Dawson Barker and Holden Cathey defeated a team from Dallas Jefferson (6-4, 6-2) and fell to a team from Frisco Liberty (6-2, 6-0) in the regional quarterfinals.


Kilgore's road to the championship included wins over Zach Fausett and Nate Morris of Center (7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-3), Brandon Shipes and John Lewis of Melissa (6-4, 6-1) and Rudy Perez and Nick Vega of Kaufman (6-3, 6-3) before defeating district rivals Zeilinger and Patel (6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

Zeilinger and Patel reached the finals with wins over teams from Irving Ranchview (6-0, 6-0), Van (7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1) and Frisco Lebenon Trail (6-1, 6-3).
