Lobo football -- practice anyway -- returns 14 days from Monday.
Fourteen is also the number of sacks recorded a year ago from Longview underclassmen on the defensive side of the ball.
Returning starter D'Marjai Dearion, who has been busy this summer with various camps, recorded four sacks. Fellow lineman JC Blakemore also notched four sacks a year ago for a young Lobo defensive front.
That youthful script has been flipped, at least on the defensive side of the ball, for the rapidly-approaching season.
Dearion and Blakemore, along with Montavian Reed and do-it-all, two-way standout KeAndre Mauldin, highlight a deep and experienced Lobo defensive line. Blakemore finished with 13 tackles for loss.
Reed and Mauldin each finished with a pair of sacks during their junior season. Adding to the Lobos' sack total from a year ago is three-year returning starter Kyle Johnson.
In total, 63 percent of the total tackles, 14-of-19 sacks and 59-of-77 tackles from loss came from underclassmen a year ago.
